2022 NYYC Race Week and Summer Sailing

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

This summer, the BUDS set sail throughout the Unites States and even in the Caribbean. The BUDS taught a next generation of sailors, enhanced their own sailing abilities, and competed with some of the best sailors in the United States.

Several BUDS took part in the New York Yacht Club Race Week in Newport, Rhode Island in July.

In the One Design IC 37 fleet, twenty-four boats battled it out for the coveted Rolex title. Noah Robitshek (ENG '25) was on the bow of Kashmir (USA 017), placing 16th place. Alum Maia Agerup (QST '20) sailed on Ursa Minor (USA 001) as a tactician, scoring 18th place. Tyler Mowry (ENG '23) placed 23rd, sailing on Kite (USA 010) on the bow.

In section ORC C, Five BUDS sailed on three different boats. On Scott Weisman’s R/P 45 “Pterodactyl”, Kevin Dooley trimmed the kite with alumni Charlie Welsh (CAS '20) and

James Collins (ENG '21) on the bow. Pterodactyl took 4th place in the ultra-competitive fleet. Coming in 6th place was R/P 42 "Rikki" where alum Fiona Gordon ('12) was

the trimming the headsail. Taking first place, alum Ken Read (CGS '81, MET '83) called the tactics on a Dunning 44 called "The Edge". Winning four out of the eight races, Ken and team sailed a masterclass event.

Instead of keelboats, sophomore Lachlan Hooper (CAS/ENG) took on foiling boats and 49ers this summer. Spending a few weeks at the Oakliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, NY, Lachlan was able to sail its Waszp. He enjoyed the change of pace from college dinghies. Additionally, Lachlan was also able to sail 49ers. He loved the trapezing and trimming the Asymmetric Kite. Inspired by BU Olympic hopefuls (Ried and Casey), Lachlan hopes to continue in the boat throughout college.

Just on the other side of Long Island, Micky Munns (QST ‘23) was busy coaching sailing and training in his 470. In between coaching his 420 squad, Micky trained in the 470. He enjoyed the diverse conditions that Long Island delivered. Micky expanded his sailing experience by trying out the Etchells this summer. He sailed as part of the Long Island’s Etchells Fleet 15.

Sailing in Boston

Maddie Stull (ENG ’23), Tyler Mowry (ENG ’23), and Noah Robitshek (ENG’ 25) also sailed dinghies this summer. Just outside of Boston, the trio sailed snipes out of Cottage Park Yacht Club. They sailed a college style A/B division regatta, taking 3rd place. Additionally, Alex Moreno (ENG ‘19) also sailed placing 7th.

Sailing in the Caribbean

Down in the Caribbean, Abby Murray (CAS'23) and Sahil Khatnani (QST '25) spent the summer instructing and coaching sailing.

Abby was the captain of a 42ft sailing catamaran in the British Virgin Islands, working for Sail Caribbean. Abby led marine biology studies, turtle tagging, scuba diving, and beach cleanups. Her job this summer was a perfect combination of her passion for sustainability and her love for sailing.

On the island of Saint Martin, Sahil worked at the Yacht Club giving sailing lessons and sailing around the Island. He returned this summer and has become an expert navigator of the trip around the Caribbean Island.

Sailing in The Great Lakes

Noah Robitshek (ENG ’25) also took to distance sailing, competing for his second time in the Chicago to Mackinac Race. The 284 mile race from the bottom to the top of Lake Michigan took two and a half days and included 50 knot squalls and brutal 30 knot headwinds. Noah enjoyed sailing on the J111 “Terrier” and continued with the team as they buoy raced in Harbor Springs, MI.
