Fall 2022 Newsletter

Dear Alumni, Parents, Sailors, and Friends of the team,

I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to catch up with you and tell you about all that has happened this fall. In the season thus far, the Boston University Dinghy Sailors (BUDS) have sailed in an astonishing twenty-two regattas across the East Coast. The BUDS have made the most out of every moment on the water.

I hope you enjoy this fall season update and if you want to learn more, please feel free to reach out. I would love to hear from you.

Preseason and First Weekend Events

This year the BUDS have welcomed plenty of new members to the team, including freshmen, sophomores, and even a junior! As is tradition, we did preseason training at the end of August to gear up for the season. We had over 20 BUDS in attendance on the Charles River over the course of four days, and five of the new freshmen were able to make it. Team bonding activities included going to a Red Sox game, team dinners, and playing name games to get to know each other. We are very excited to continue the team's legacy with our fantastic new members and keep the fun of preseason alive.

The BUDS Executive Board

Over the summer, the team worked hard to elect and appoint three captains and seven board members. In revamping our board, we developed our website, revamped our social media presence, and improved our team cohesiveness. Each member brings a set of unique talents and special skills to the team. The following members make up the 2022/2023 executive board.

Women's Captain - Maddie Stull President - Tyler Mowry

Crew Captain - Abby Murray Vice President - Cat Shakin

Open Captain - Matt Hamelsky Public Relations - Tiare Sierra

Alumni Relations - Noah Robitshek Treasurer - Lachlan Hooper

Freshman Advisors - Cole Weigand and Shana Witzen

The following is a highlight of three board members who help to foster the future of the team.

I'm Cat Shakin. I'm a senior from Boston studying journalism at BU, and I am also the VP of the sailing team. I started sailing on Cape Cod when I was six years old, and it was there that I developed not only a love for sailing but a love for racing as well. I took that with me to high school at Tabor Academy, where I learned how to be a crew, and then I

brought those skills to BU. My favorite part of being a college sailor is the community we have. The college sailing community is an incredible group of people. I love going to regattas and seeing friends from all over. I am excited to spend my last year at BU competing for the buds.

I am Cole Wiegand, a sophomore in the college of engineering. I'm from Annapolis, MD, and I have been sailing from a young age. I am excited to start my second year on the team and work on becoming a more competitive sailor. As a freshman advisor, I am ready to help the freshman class acclimate to the team as well.

I'm Tiare Sierra, a sophomore pursuing a major in Earth and Environment and a minor in Philosophy at BU. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and have known sailing since a very young age. I began sailing when I was twelve years old, and seven years later, here I am now! I am a skipper for the Boston University Sailing Team and this year's Sports Information Director. Being a part of the BUDS is probably one of my favorite parts of the college experience. I can't wait to see where our excellent performance and competitiveness take us this year. Rah BUDS!

Media Day Highlight

On September 15th, our talented alumn Lexi Pline '19 stopped by practice to lend her photography expertise and shoot our 2022 / 23 BUDS Media Day. Pline was equipped with state of photography equipment for headshots on land and action shots on the water. While on the Charles, Pline jumped into action, capturing the exhilaration of a BUDS Practice.

Below are some of the highlights from Media Day!

Season in Review

The fall season is more than halfway through, and the BUDs are off to a great start.

Weekend one saw the BUDS at five different regattas across New England, including the Harry Anderson at Yale, the Toni Deutsch at MIT, the Harvard Invite, and the Pine Invite for J/70s at Coast Guard Academy.

Week two of the season brought the BUDS to Tufts, Harvard, and MIT. Freshman skipper Porter Bell and sophomore crew Carolyn Kravets won A Division at the NEISA Symposium at Tufts, putting our burgee at the top of the board on Techscore. The team at MIT finished 5th overall at the Hatch Brown, with 6th in A Division, 7th in B, and 4th in C.

Week three had teams at MIT, Brown, and Tufts again. Week four was windy as the east coast received tails of breeze leftover from Hurricane Ian down in Florida. Two regattas sailed during week four were called off on Sunday due to high winds. The regattas that weekend were the Danmark Trophy at Coast Guard, the Women's Showcase at Brown, Smith at MIT, and the Moody Trophy at URI. Our women's team was so close but did not qualify for ACCs.

Week five brought the coed team down to St. Mary's College of Maryland, where they competed at the Showcase. They did not qualify for Coed ACCs, but A Division team Tyler Mowry '23 and Cat Shakin '23 scored 4th in their division. The BUDS also sent a team to the Great Herring Pond Open in Plymouth, where they earned 2nd overall.

Week six also sent the BUDS to the Truxton Umstead at the Naval Academy and the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament in NYC. Alumni Maia Agerup '20 was able to step in and help coach our women's team in New York.

Looking back on the season so far, the team has been highly competitive and had some stand-out performances across the board.

Alumni Night Hockey Game

We are so ecstatic to bring back the BUDS Alumni Hockey game! On Friday, November 18th, the BU Sailing team will host a Pre Hockey game banquet for all team alums. The banquet will take place at 6 pm in the "Friends and Family room" in Agganis Arena and will be complementary with the purchase of a game ticket. Please RSVP to the posting on Eventbrite at the link found here.

More information will be available in the upcoming days. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with Noah at noahro@bu.edu or 231-342-6931.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Assistant Coach Position

The BUDS are actively seeking a part-time Assistant Coach! The Assistant Coach will assist the Head Coach, Kevin Dooley, with recruiting and developing the BU Sailing team and recreational sailing. The ideal candidate will be available to assist with at least two weekly practices and attend one regatta each weekend, as coordinated with the Head Coach. Feel free to apply to the link here or forward us any suggestions to dooleyks@bu.edu

Terriers Together

The Terriers Together Campaign begins today! Terriers Together is a three-day fundraising campaign to support the Club Sports of BU. This fall, we are reaching out to friends, family, and supporters of the team and asking for your support. Financial support is the foundation for the training, traveling, and competition we participate in nationwide. We are so excited to be part of this important event.

The campaign will start on Tuesday, October 18th, and conclude on Thursday, October 20th. The link to donations can be found here and on our website.

Please get in touch with Noah Robitshek at noahro@bu.edu if you have any questions.

Alumni Regatta

This years Alunmi Regatta is already in the planning stages. With the exact date to be determined soon, we are looking forward to seeing you all around the beginning of May! Stay tuned for more information soon...

Upcoming Season Preview

Looking forward to the rest of the season, we only have a couple of weeks left. But, in those weeks are some of the most exciting competitions. We have the Coed and Women's NEISA Championships, otherwise known as the Schell Trophy at The Coast Guard Academy and the Urn Trophy at Brown. Another fun tradition that the BUDS have taken part in for a long time is the Nickerson Trophy. The Freshmen-only event hosted by Tufts is something that our team always looks forward to! We are so excited to see what our freshmen can do this year.

Stay tuned for more updates on the BUDS competition schedule for the Spring season and to see how our team does in the last weeks of Fall 2022.
