Season Update

The sailing season has gotten off to a phenomenal start! We welcomed 11 new sailors to the team, who have adapted quickly to the Charles and have already been difference makers at regattas. We welcome back coaches Hannah Emmert and Rob Dexter ‘79, who have their sights set on another Nationals appearance this spring. We also welcome volunteer coaches Matt Kaplan (J.D. Candidate, BU Law) and Patrick Power (PhD Candidate, BU Econ).

This September, the BUDS competed at 12 regattas across New England. Highlights include regatta wins at the Barnett Trophy at Bowdoin and the Charles River Invite at Harvard, and our first appearance at the NEISA Singlehanded Championship in 5 years! The team is also looking to do more keelboat events, building upon their success at the Harman Cup in Colgate 26s earlier this year. Looking ahead, the Women’s Team will travel to Brown this weekend for Women’s ACC’s Round 1, while the Coed team travels to Navy next weekend for their ACC’s Round 1.

We also welcome a new executive board: President Tiare Sierra (CAS ‘25), Vice President Nick Thibodeau (ENG ‘26), Treasurer Sam Whipple (QST ‘25), Sports Information Director Porter Bell (QST ‘26), Captains Grace Murphy (CAS ‘25) and Gavin Monaghan (CAS ‘26), and Fleet Captain Nathan Selian (ENG ‘25).

Summer 2024

The BUDS kept up their sailing all summer! Noah Robitshek competed on IC37 Kashmir, and sailed at the Melges 15 National Championships in Traverse City, Michigan, placing 5th overall. Tiare Sierra and Grace Murphy sailed in the 3rd Annual Newport Women’s Thistle Regatta with coach Rob’s daughter. Micky Kalich (ENG ‘26) sailed the Sunfish circuit, placing 24th in a 105 boat fleet at North Americans, and qualifying for the 2025 Sunfish World Championships in Salinas, Ecuador.
