Week 1 Recap

This past weekend, hot temperatures and a high-pressure system led to light winds across the northeast coast. From the Charles River to the Yale Sailing Center, the BUDS raced all over the east coast.

Five BUDS and Head Coach Kevin Dooley spent the weekend at The Yale Corinthian Yacht Club racing in light and variable conditions. Fickle winds, in combination with strong currents, created challenging unstable conditions. Seniors Tyler Mowry '23 and Catherine Shakin '23 had a breakout performance, winning race one of The Harry Anderson Jr. Trophy. Seniors Micky Munns '23 and Matthew Hamelsky '23 sailed the B division finishing 11th out of 18 boats.

In New London, Connecticut, Four BUDS took part in the Pine Trophy sailing J70s. With only 17 points separating second and seventh place, the BUDS fought hard all weekend. Light winds led to seven races on the first day and only one race on the final day of the regatta.

On the Charles River, the Lady BUDS raced at the Toni Deutsch '58 Regatta. Extremely light winds made for unstable winds but Lucy Paskoff '24 and Freshman Arielle Candaele '26 found consistency in the highly challenging conditions. Sailing in A division were Tiare Sierra '25 and Maddie Stull '23.

Sweeping B division Nathan Selian '25 and Shana Weitzen '25 took the top spot in their division at the Charles Invitational. In A division, Porter Bell '26 and Carolyn Kravets '25 finished 3rd, leading to the first overall win for the BUDS! Congrats Team!

Additionally, BU sent three teams to the "Harvard Invitational." Congratulations Gavin Monaghan '26 and Sahil Khatnani '25 on their top performance! Rounding out the regatta, Cole Wiegand '25 and Grace Murphy '25 as well as Micky Kailich '26 and Jack Cariaso '25 also competed.
