Week 3 Recap

This weekend the BUDS sailed at three regattas across New England.

The Hoyt Regatta at Brown University

Six BUDS and coach Kevin Dooley spent the weekend at the Hoyt Regatta at the Brown Sailing Pavilion in Rhode Island. On Saturday, northwesterly winds of 8 - 16 knots brought huge shifts and puffs onto the racing venue. The final day of racing brought light winds in the morning and a building sea breeze towards the end of the day. In B division, sophomore Noah Robitshek and senior Abby Murry had a stellar final day of the regatta scoring a 4,3,13,2 in the last 4 races of the regatta. Competing in A division was Tyler Mowry '23 and Catherine Shakin '23. Heavy wind reserves were Madeline Stull '23 and Chet Swanson ‘23.

The Hood Trophy at Tufts Sailing Center

At the Tuft’s Sailing Center, the BUDS raced at The Hood Trophy. The first day brought strong winds to Mystic Lake with huge differential conditions and shifting breeze. On Sunday, a light breeze persisted throughout the morning. In B division, sophomore Tiare Sierra and freshman Jack Culton had an improving trend over the twelve races. In A division, Elliott Mendenhall '25 and Lachlan Hooper '25 sailed race one through ten. Illness struck Mendenhall after day one and reserve sailor Micky Munns '23 drove for the last two races.

Tech Dingy Invitational at MIT

Back on the Charles, four BUDS competed in the Tech Dinghy Invitational Regatta. A standout performance from freshman Jack Cabell. Cabell had a top-three performance in seven of the nine races, landing him in second place in the fleet of eighteen boats. Additional sailors include Rio Korzinek '25 and Micky Kailich '26 who tied for 7th and Josh Sultanik '26 who came in 10th.

Congrats to all the BUDS who competed this weekend!

This week the BUDs will be training hard for the four different regattas around New England. The Women's Team will be racing at the Women's Showcase at Brown and the Open Team will be competing at the Coast Guard Academy for the Denmark Trophy. Additionally, the BUDS will be competing for the Moody Trophy at the University of Rhode Island and the Smith Trophy at MIT.
